Torsion and extension — they fail differently
Torsion springs sit on a bar above the opening and are what almost every door in the valley uses. Extension springs run along the horizontal tracks on either side, and turn up on older doors here. Torsion failure is loud and total. Extension failure is often quieter and lopsided — one side of the door lifts and the other drags.
Springs are rated in cycles, not years: 10,000 to 20,000 cycles, which works out at roughly seven to fourteen years for a door that opens four times a day. A household with two drivers and a teenager burns that clock about twice as fast as the rating assumes.
